Mills River NC Events in October 2026: Beyond LEAF

October 8, 2026

"We're not doing our festival this October," a LEAF Global Arts spokesperson told WLOS at the end of July. That was five months after the organization said its fall festival was leaving Lake Eden after 30 years and coming to Deerfields in Mills River for Oct. 16–18. On Aug. 20, 6AM City said LEAF Global Arts would stop operating in its current form the next day, while the board kept the nonprofit active and looked at future programming. The March announcement still shows up in searches. If you penciled in a global arts festival at the end of South Mills River Road this month, you can take it off your calendar.

The October 16–18 weekend is still busy, though. Sierra Nevada, Bold Rock, North River Farms, Mills River Brewing Co., the Mills River Partnership and the Saturday farm market had already scheduled October around their own seasons. Nobody needed to fill a gap. Taken weekend by weekend, those separate calendars turn out to be the town's fall festival. It just runs for a month.

What Deerfields was going to bring

The site LEAF picked is no small field. Deerfields says it's a 940-acre family tract next to Pisgah National Forest. The family bought the land in 1927 and built the lodge in 1935. The family later partnered with the land trust now called Carolina Conservancy, and the trust says 828 acres are permanently protected from development. Music isn't new there either. Deerfields says it has hosted shows since Halloween 1998, with crowds of up to 3,000. Past performers include Little Feat, Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule, and the Avett Brothers.

Getting there is the part locals already know. You drive five miles up South Mills River Road, turn onto Watagnee Trail, and finish on gravel. The venue warns that cell service drops out about two miles up South Mills River Road. A three-day festival would have sent all of that traffic onto one rural road. Instead, LEAF's website now points to a separate Lake Eden Reunion on the same dates, back in the Swannanoa Valley. The festival's original dates went back over the mountain to Lake Eden.

Oct. 16–18, as it actually stands

Here's what Mills River has on the weekend LEAF was supposed to fill. None of it was planned around LEAF.

Day Where What Time
Fri, Oct. 16 Sierra Nevada Amphitheater Andrew Scotchie 7–9:30 p.m.
Fri, Oct. 16 Bold Rock, 72 School House Road Club Rewind 80s 6–9 p.m.
Sat, Oct. 17 Bold Rock Fall Foliage Fest from 11 a.m.
Sat, Oct. 17 Sierra Nevada Amphitheater Luke Deuce 2–5 p.m.
Sat, Oct. 17 Sierra Nevada Lower Park Celebration in the Park featuring The Last Revel 4–7 p.m.
Sat, Oct. 17 Bold Rock Outdoor Hocus Pocus screening 8 p.m.
Sun, Oct. 18 Sierra Nevada Amphitheater Big Blue 2–5 p.m.

Saturday carries the weekend. Sierra Nevada's Lower Park show celebrates the release of the 2026 Celebration Fresh Hop IPA. That date comes from the hop harvest, not from any festival calendar. Bold Rock's Fall Foliage Fest has cider and donuts, pumpkin painting, free hayrides, a corn box and vendors. Bold Rock's listing shows 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., but the event description says the fall activities run until 6. Check with the cidery before you plan a late-afternoon stop. Sierra Nevada lists its campus at 100 Sierra Nevada Way. On a free Saturday, you can catch the afternoon amphitheater set, walk over to the Lower Park show and still make the Hocus Pocus screening at Bold Rock.

Bold Rock's Thursday before that weekend is quieter, with a cheese and cider flight pairing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 15.

The weekend before set the pattern

The Oct. 9–10 weekend looks the same, just with farm equipment. North River Farms hosts its Fall Harvest Days both days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3333 North Mills River Road. It's free and happens rain or shine, and the farm's listing mentions a tractor show and tractor pull. That Friday night, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue play Sierra Nevada's amphitheater with Abraham Alexander from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday brings The Late Shifters from 2 to 5 p.m. and Florencia and the Feeling from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Bold Rock has Grass Owls on Friday and Silver Travis Band on Saturday, both 6 to 9 p.m.

The following Tuesday, Oct. 13, brings the most outdoorsy event of the month. The Mills River Partnership leads a four-mile watershed hike to the Hendersonville Reservoir from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hikers meet at the North Mills River Recreation Area's lower lot, carpool to Trace Ridge and start walking from the Trace Ridge parking lot. The hike caps a busy season for the Partnership. In late August, the group held a Blue Ridge Snorkel Trail program for kids at the reopened Mills River Park boat landing with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Pisgah River Rangers. On Aug. 31, it planted about 800 sedges and other riparian plants along Brandy Branch off Banner Farm Road with Sierra Nevada. Back in town on the evening of the Oct. 13 hike, Sierra Nevada's High Gravity room hosts TERRAOKE, a free karaoke night from 5 to 9 p.m.

Mills River Brewing Co. at 336 Banner Farm Road keeps its weekly rhythm all month. It runs a "Survey Says!" game on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and the Bear Creek String Bandits host a bluegrass jam on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

School House Road holds both ends of the month

Two of the month's anchors sit less than a block apart. Bold Rock's Mills River taproom is at 72 School House Road. The Mills River Farm Market meets at Mills River Elementary School, 94 School House Road. It runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, and its 2026 season goes from May 2 to Oct. 31. It's a producer-only market, and it opened this season with 27 vendors.

That makes Halloween both the market's last morning of the year and one of the busiest nights on the road. Here's how Saturday, Oct. 31, plays out:

  1. 8 a.m. to noon: The Mills River Farm Market's final Saturday of the season, with free admission.
  2. 2 to 5 p.m.: Ashley Heath and Her Heathens play the Sierra Nevada Amphitheater.
  3. 5:30 p.m.: Doors open for Flashback Band's Halloween Party at Mills River Brewing Co. The music runs 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with a costume contest.
  4. 8 to 10:30 p.m.: Bold Rock screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show outdoors, props included.

The night before, Magenta Sunshine plays the amphitheater from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and The Blue Stump Band plays Bold Rock from 6 to 9 p.m. If you've seen trunk-or-treat or pumpkin-carving listings for Mills River Brewing Co., those are from 2024 and 2025. Nothing for this year had been posted as of early October.

The quieter weeks in between

The weekends after Oct. 18 are lighter but not empty. Larkin Poe plays the amphitheater on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Boot Juice and Unihorn take the 2 to 5 p.m. slots on Oct. 24 and 25. Bold Rock has Hammock Theory on Oct. 23 and Showboat Band on Oct. 24, both 6 to 9 p.m.

For families with young kids, the Mills River Library at 124 Town Center Drive keeps its own schedule. Family Storytime runs Mondays from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 5, 19 and 26. PAWS for Reading follows from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the same Mondays and on Nov. 2, and it requires registration. LEGO Club meets Oct. 5 and Nov. 2 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The town's own October calendar lists committee, board and council meetings, not a town-run festival. Everything above comes from a farm, a brewery, a cidery, a library branch or a watershed group running its own season. The season keeps going after Halloween. Bold Rock's Flannels and Flapjacks is Nov. 7, with pancakes, live wood carving and Iggy Radio at 6 p.m. Sierra Nevada's Celly Drippins release is in the Taproom on Nov. 6 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Jim and Julie at Boyd Mallett Group keep track of Mills River at this level, down to which listings are current and which address on School House Road is which.
